Bloomberg Strikes Again: NYC Bans Food Donations To The Homeless
Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s food police have struck again!
Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content.
Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.
It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.
“I can’t give you something that’s a supplement to the food you already have? Sorry that’s wrong,” Richter said.
Richter has been collecting food from places like the Ohav Zedek synagogue and bringing it to homeless shelters for more than 20 years, but recently his donation, including a “cholent” or carrot stew, was turned away because the Bloomberg administration wants to monitor the salt, fat and fiber eaten by the homeless.
Richter said he was stunned. He said his family has eaten the same food forever and flourished.

“My father lived to 97; my grandfather lived to 97, and they all enjoyed it and somehow we’re being told that this is no good and I think there is a degree of management that becomes micromanagement and when you cross that line simply what you’re doing is wrong,” Richter said.

But Mayor Bloomberg, a salt-aholic himself, was unapologetic.
“For the things that we run because of all sorts of safety reasons, we just have a policy it is my understanding of not taking donations,” Bloomberg said.
Told that his administration recently enacted the policy, the mayor was Grinch-like.
“If they did in the past they shouldn’t have done it and we shouldn’t have accepted it,” Bloomberg said.
Richter said that over the years he’s delivered more than two tons of food to the homeless. He said Mayor Bloomberg is eating away at his ability to do good.
The ban on food donations was made by an inter-agency task force that includes the departments of Health and Homeless Services.

Mayor Bloomberg: I Would Cut The Number Of Teachers In Half
Mayor Bloomberg was apparently full of interesting things to say while talking at MIT this week. Not only did he refer to the NYPD as “my own army but he also apparently expressed a very, shall we say, interesting view on how he would fix the city’s schools in a perfect world: “If I had the ability to just design the system and say ex cathedra this is what we’re going to do you would cut the number of teachers in half and weed out all the bad ones.”
The man who once disastrously hired magazine executive Cathie Black to run the city’s schools and has failed in his attempts at merit-based layoffs then went on to explain that ”double the class size with a better teacher is a good deal for the students.”
Full quote: “Education is very much, I’ve always thought, just like the real estate business. Real estate business, there are three things that matter: location, location, location is the old joke. Well in education, it is: quality of teacher, quality of teacher, quality of teacher. And I would—if I had the ability, which nobody does really, to just design a system and say, ‘ex cathedra, this is what we’re going to do,’ you would cut the number of teachers in half, but you would double the compensation of them, and you would weed out all the bad ones and just have good teachers. And double the class size with a better teacher is a good deal for the students.”

Yes, teacher quality is important. You know how you improve teacher quality? Reducing class sizes (even the best teacher can’t keep a room of 40 little kids under control), increasing salaries to attract the best and brightest, oh and giving them some vague semblance of JOB SECURITY so that the best teachers will actually want to teach.
Fuck you, Bloomberg.

  14. Went to the OWS General Assembly Tonight

First they tried to divert the trains from taking people there, saying the ACE was going to suddenly run from Canal St and then go straight into Brooklyn. That was fun.

We met a woman on the train who came with us to the GA.

The park is now fenced in by barricades and the police monitor who comes in and out. You cannot enter if you are carrying items that they deem to be too large, and they are filming people.

But a lot of people came out tonight.

Hundreds of people who are still determined to work hard and to rebuild.

Trinity Church is letting OWS use their property to prepare food for everyone.

We all talked together and passed food around while the cops stood by and watched us.

It was empowering. It was energizing. People figuring out solutions together. Breaking bread.

This attack on us has given us even more momentum, even more drive.

So I thank you, NYPD and Mayor Bloomberg, for giving us yet another burst of energy, and for growing the support for this movement amongst the people. Every time you try to beat us, we just get stronger. So thanks.

    You can’t stop this.
